What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is an established and dynamic profession that uses a range of treatment techniques to restore movement and function to the body. A physiotherapist is trained to examine and diagnose problems in joints, muscles and other soft tissues.
At Carleton Treatment Centre, physiotherapy is carried out by Pauline Munro. She will formulate an effective treatment plan for your particular problem – no two courses of physiotherapy treatment are the same. Your treatment will take into account your lifestyle, leisure activities, general health and what you want to get out of the therapy. Pauline may also show you exercises you can do between the treatment sessions, and how to set goals to achieve results.
Common physiotherapy problems that Pauline can treat include:
Spinal problems including prolapsed discs, degeneration, sciatica, lumbago, stiff/painful neck and referred arm and leg pains.
Joint problems such as arthritis, injury, pain and swelling, stiffness in joints.
Sports and soft tissue injuries to muscles, ligament, tendons and cartilage.
Whiplash and neck pain.
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) and other work related conditions.
Treatment may involve:
Mobilisation and manipulation applied to joints to reduce stiffness, relieve pain and restore normal movement.
Soft tissue massage to reduce scar tissue, relieve muscle spasm and accelerate the healing process.
Electrotherapy techniques including ultrasound and interferential electrotherapy to relieve pain and enhance the healing process.
Exercise Programmes to improve mobility and strength and muscles.
Prevention – looking at the cause of the injury and advising on means of stopping re-occurrence by the use of exercises and postural advice. Learning about a problem also gives you the confidence to get back to normal activities quickly.
Your first consultation will consist of a full assessment and treatment in the same session. At your first visit Pauline will be able to give you some idea of the number of treatments you will need; most cases require on average of six treatments. Each treatment session lasts at least thirty minutes.
Referral by a doctor is not a requirement; however, if you are seeking reimbursement from private health insurance companies they may want you to have spoken to your doctor first.
